POSITION:    AUDIO VISUAL AIDE

DESCRIPTION

An employee in this class is responsible for the receipt, storage, care and issuance of audio-visual equipment in a

department or institution. Responsibility extends to the preparation of all varieties of visual aides to be used for group presentations, the instruction of staff in the use of audio-visual equipment, and the ordering of new and replacement supplies and equipment. General supervision is received from a higher level administrative employee in the organization. Under immediate supervision operates various machines used in the reproduction of educational and general printed materials.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

  • Maintains systems of equipment inventory, checking items in/out;
  • Delivers/ picks-up equipment upon request;
  • Sets up and operates audio and video equipment;
  • Assists in the reproduction of educational graphic material for publications such as: booklets, reports, posters, illustrations, show cards, storyboards, maps, charts, and, graphs;
  • Makes printing arrangements;
  • Provides recommendations to educators on methods and materials pertaining to AV needs;
  • Assists in creating, producing and preparing slide shows and multi media shows, exhibits, projectuals and wall displays;
  • Assists in maintaining inventory logs on audio-visual materials, equipment, and supplies;
  • Assist in annual inventory of print and non print media and equipment;
  • Reproduce copies of reviews and other items, as instructed;
  • Prepare and maintain records deemed appropriate by audio visual supervisor;
  • Assist in the preparation of attractive displays and bulletin boards;
  • Process print and non-print materials as directed by audio visual supervisor;
  • Operates Gestelner machines, mimeograph, duplicating, and postage machines;
  • Operates electronic stencil production, offset master production and paper folding machines;
  • Operates slide projector, overhead, opaque projector, filmstrip projector and viewer, cassette recorder, record player, movie projector, video-cassette recorder, computer, etc;
  • Assists in the operation of tape recorders, movie projectors and other A.V. equipment;
  • Adjusts minor mechanical errors in any of the machines.
  • Performs chauffeur duties as required;
  • Performs related work as required.

FACTOR I:   KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of materials, equipment, techniques, methods and procedures for reproduction of educational material;
  • Knowledge of technology in scanning, copying, and reproduction;
  • Knowledge of computer programs such as word and power point for the production of educational material;
  • Ability to operate mechanical equipment such as computer projectors, tape recorders, etc.;
  • Ability to maintain simple clerical records such as used in inventory charge out and return of equipment and material;
  • Ability to read and write English at a level required for successful job performance;
  • Ability to read and comprehend to follow instruction booklets on new technology;
  • Ability to conduct simple subject research;
  • Ability to assist in the production of slide shows, graphics and films;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

FACTOR II:  SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

  • Works under general supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment;
  • Employee works under the supervision of a higher-level officer who assigns duties, describes scope of goals and objectives and furnishes guidance only on critical issues;
  • Work is controlled by routine review and reporting to or consultation with supervisors;
  • Work is reviewed through conferences, reports and achievement of objectives;
  • Incumbent follows given schedules based on the understanding of defined objectives and priorities, supervisor reviews work after completion;
  • Instruction provided only in new situations, methods, procedures that are not clearly related to existing tasks and duties;

FACTOR III: GUIDELINES

  • Federal and departmental guidelines and procedures must be followed;
  • Employee is expected to use knowledge acquired through training and experience in making independent decisions.

FACTOR IV: COMPLEXITY

  • Work may involve a variety of duties;
  • Alternatives may exist for methods to be used in solving technological reproduction situations;
  • Duties require some degree of concentration because of factors to be considered and weighed before decisions are made;
  • Guidelines at this level are technical in nature;
  • May face multiple or conflicting demands, deadlines, emergencies, or time pressures.

FACTOR V: SCOPE AND EFFECT

  • Facilitates audio visual specialist by attending to a variety of details, as directed;
  • Work requires ability to follow instructions and meet deadlines;
  • Employee works under the supervision of a higher-level officer who assigns duties, describes scope of goals and objectives and furnishes guidance only on critical issues.

FACTOR VI, VII: PERSONAL CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

  • Contact is made with co-workers, employees from other government agencies, managerial personnel and other administrative officials for the purpose of offering or obtaining specialized information and to provide assistance on routine and complex matters;
  • Involvement outside the immediate unit is ongoing.

FACTOR VIII: PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:

  • Sit, and talk or hear within normal range;
  • Reach with hands and arms;
  • Read fine print, and review information on a PC monitor, as well as, hard copy output;
  • Manipulate objects with fingers. For example, using a keyboard;
  • Use the spoken word;
  • Move about and exert some physical dexterity.
  • Carry up to 70 pounds.

FACTOR IX: WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work environment involves normal everyday hazards or discomforts typical of offices, meeting and training rooms, or libraries;
  • Comfortable levels of temperature, ventilation, lighting and sound are inherent in the work environment;
  • Exposure to deviations from pleasant environmental conditions is only occasional.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of the twelfth grade; with secretarial/clerical skills; Two years of post-high school education with training in the library/media field preferred.
  • Possession of a current motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
